YOUTH CRICKET IN THE LEAGUE
The Junior Section was formed in 1952 with the aim of encouraging all youngsters in the area to participate in the game of Cricket. The League offers competitive cricket in both League and Cup competitions, at Under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 age levels and has representative teams in the Lords Taverners Yorkshire Under 11, 13 and 15 Festivals as well as the prestigious U 17 Joe Lumb Competition. In 2002 the League formed an U9 Friendly League with ten teams and has teams entered in the U9 Yorkshire Tea Competition.
The WCL management Board encourages clubs to nominate juniors with suitably perceived skill at cricket for the representative squads and coaching sessions.
Nominations of Junior Players are required for the PATHWAYS TO EXCELLENCE scheme. These should be sent in the first instance to the Junior Secretary. Application Forms are included in the YCB mail-outs sent to Club Secretaries or can be downloaded from the YCA/YCB web-site.
The junior cricket section works closely with the Wetherby branch of the Association of Cricket Coaches who organise assessment and coaching sessions throughout the year for juniors and directly operate the representative sides.
All those involved with junior cricket in whatever capacity are required to be CRB checked and it is the aim of the junior section that all clubs within the WCL have a qualified ECB coach.
